 Mindfulness Meditation For Health, Healing and Conscious Living

John Barter Classes for 2009 at the Buddhist Library

From February 12th – April 9th for 9 weeks, Every Thursday (10.15 - 12.15AM)

Cost: $190* (Booking Essential) and $140 for Concession

Much of the stress, issues and illness of contemporary life may relate to the fact that we have not, or are not ‘living our life consciously?. By training our mind through meditation, we can become more mindful and conscious of our on going life experience, living our life with both intention and attention. This 9 week course enables ‘Conscious Living? through having a ‘conscious relationship to the fullness of our life. In this way we may begin to reduce stress, angst and unease, bringing healing to both specifi c issues or illness, and to our life in general.

This course is not just for those experiencing illness or issues, but is also of benefi t for health-care professionals and for any one that wants to enhance psycho physical and psycho-spirtual well being and live life consciously.

Learning Outcomes Include:

Develop an understanding and personal practice of Mindfulness Meditations.

An appreciation of the MIND-BODY therapeutic benefi ts of
Meditation especially through stress reduction.

Psycho-therapeutic perspectives for looking into the relationship we have with issues or illness, while also developing skillful means to help and heal what may be seen as an ‘unhealthy relationship? to our issue or illness.

Understandings in working with Emotions for health, healing, and well-being.

Perspectives and practices for maintaining health and wellness, while guarding against stress and illness.

Potential learning's and appreciation?s that come from working with the issues of contemporary life.

John Barter is a psychologist, university lecturer and meditation teacher. He brings to his work over 20 years of personal practice in mindfulness based Meditation, 11 years of which he was a Buddhist monk of the Theravada Forest Tradition. John is a regular and highly esteemed teacher at the Buddhist Library. He has a private counseling practice – WELL-AWARE-NESS Counseling and Consulting in Crows Nest and in Darling Point, Sydney.

His nine week meditation course provides scriptural reference to these spiritual perfections from the birth (jataka) stories of the Buddha. It also provides explanation and appreciation of how these qualities can be developed through the practice of meditation and engagement in daily life.

Each of the 9 sessions is of 1 1/2 hours duration, and is comprised of:

1. Progressive instruction in meditation
2. Instruction in the application of meditation with regards to the course theme
3. Guided meditation practice
4. Discussion, question/answer time


 Mindfulness Meditation Workshop

Tuesday Evenings

5 week workshop Tuesdays from 27 January - 24 February, Time - 7.00 - 8.45PM

This workshop is designed as an introduction to the Buddhist practice of mindfulness meditation. It covers topics relating to mindfulness and introduces the participants to meditation practice through guided meditation sessions.

The course is structured especially for beginners. It has been introduced as part of the weekly Tuesday night educational sessions at the Buddhist Library and participants are encouraged to attend all five modules as each module is an extension on the previous session.

This 5 week workshop on Mindful Meditation is free, however, participants are requested to consider giving a weekly donation during the course to help cover the cost of the overall administration of the Buddhist Library.

Profile of Facilitators

Chien Hoong Gooi, is currently completing his Doctorate of Clinical Psychology. As part of this Doctorate, Chien Hoong is researching the application of Buddhist mindfulness practices in the treatment of anxiety disorders. Chien Hoong has been a Buddhist Chaplain at the University of New South Wales and is currently serving on the management committee of the Australian Association of Buddhist Counselors and Psychotherapists. He has facilitated workshops and given talks on Buddhism at the Buddhist Library and Meditation Centre, Buddhist Council of NSW and to the Buddhist youth community.

Jim Teoh has been a Buddhist teacher for over fifteen years and was one of the initiators of the earliest structured Buddhist programs presented at the Buddhist Library. Jim has taught numerous courses in Buddhism to various organisations in Sydney, such as the Buddhist Council of NSW, Buddhist Library and Meditation Centre, Indonesian Buddhist Society of NSW and Bodhikusuma Buddhist and Meditation Centre. Jim is a regular speaker and meditation workshop facilitator at University Buddhist organisations. He is also trained as a Hospital Buddhist Chaplain.

 Buddhism in a Nutshell by Chien Hoong Gooi and Jim Teoh

24th January 2009 (Saturday) from 10.00 am – 2.30 pm (with half-hour lunch break around noon)

Location: Buddhist Library ~ 90 - 92 Church Street, Camperdown

This is a short introductory course that covers the key aspects of Buddhism and is suited for beginners and those who wish to gain an overview of the Buddha’s teachings.

The course will be presented by a panel of speakers from various backgrounds and chaired by two key facilitators, Chien Hoong Gooi and Jim Teoh. This will also be an excellent opportunity to ask all your questions about Buddhism.

Structure of the course will include:
- The Historical Buddha
- Traditions within Buddhism
- Key Messages of the Buddha
- True Nature of our Experience
- Misconceptions about Buddhism
- Applying the Teachings in Daily Life

The course is free but participants are asked to consider giving a donation to assist in the administration of the Buddhist Library.

Please note light refreshments will be provided however participants are asked to bring their own lunch.
